our favorites from 2012

Hello friends!

We can hardly believe that 2012 is nearly over, but are eagerly looking forward to the new year!  The past year has been so amazing, and we thought it would be fun to look back at some of our favorite posts.

This has definitely been our most popular post of the year....diy: buttoned up infinity scarf.


We also revealed the fact that we all like moustaches quite a lot (especially Jordyn!).
We baked moustache cookies...twice (1, 2), made mugs for movember, and threw a magnificent moustache party!


We teased you all with our tasty tuesdays!  Please let us know if you've tried any of our recipes, what you thought of them, and what you'd like to see us try!


And one of our most adventurous experiments in the kitchen was sushi cake that we made for a friend's birthday!

merry christmas!

Hello our dear readers & a very very Merry Christmas to you all! 

Thank you all for being so supportive of our blog, we love & appreciate you all. 
However, so that we can enjoy this beautiful time of year, we will be taking a one-week break from our blog. So don't be alarmed! We aren't abandoning ship, simply enjoying all the turkey, stuffing, eggnog, cookies, pie, and hot chocolate that we'll be inhaling with our friends and family. So as we take our break, we hope that you too will be enjoying family, friends, good eats, Christmas carols, snow (if your climate is anything like ours!), and the joy of giving and remembering the true meaning of Christmas.

weekly wrap-up : instagrams

My week summed up in instagrams... 
...I finally finished exams!! So long UofA till the New Year!
... opened more stocking stuffers with my man =]
...finally played (&won) Ticket to Ride with our dear friends!
...watched some glorious, cold sunrises from our balcony
...made this "oh deer" bleached tank top diy
...drank copious amounts of eggnog & coffee =]
...took our new Kia Sportage on its first mini roadtrip down to Caleb's parents place!
...fell in love with these cute candles at Indigo

...and enjoyed beautiful snowy days bundled up in knitted scarves & headbands! 

Hope your week leading up to Christmas was as lovely as mine =]

outfit post : a splash of mustard

Today's outfit post comes with a splash of one of my current colour obsessions: mustard! 
I love how it adds such a fun pop to outfits, drawing the eye and making you smile =]
toque : craft sale, (handmade by Kirsten Buyer for a LoveWorks Fundraiser)  
necklace : handmade and gifted to me from dear Kelsey! 
cardigan : my mom's closet, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I steal her clothes! (sorry mom, & I hope you don't see this...cause I really love your clothes and have no intention of returning any)
tank top : urban outfitters     pants & belt : joe fresh      boots : spring 
And I have to say that these have quickly become my go-to boots, I am in LOVE with these! Comfy, warm, NOT slippery (which is essential to a clumsy gal like me...), and so fun with the tribal embroidery. So, a big thanks to my man for indulging me with them =] Really, he's the best & I have to give him credit for these.

diy : burlap bird's nest ornament

After seeing this adorable diy from A Beautiful Mess, I was just dying to make birds nest ornaments myself, so while Kelsey was visiting, we made a spin-off of Katie's original version. I am currently obsessed with burlap (and luckily I have loads and loads and loads of it!), so we made our nests out of burlap and went for a more rustic look for our ornaments. 

What you need: scissors, burlap, wire, a glue gun, jute, and little birdies. I got my birds as a pack at the dollar store & loved how they look! 

Before you start actually creating the bird's nest, you need to cut your burlap into long approximately 2-3cm wide strips. 
{ n e s t  .  i n s t r u c t i o n s } 

1. Cut a piece of wire and form a circle. 
2. Cut another piece of wire (longer this time) and start crisscrossing it around the first circle. 
3. Grab a glue gun, attach your first strip of burlap, and then start weaving your burlap in and out of the crisscrossed wires until you can no longer see the wires.
4. Glue down any loose ends, make sure that your wire nest is completely covered with burlap.
5. Glue gun your birdie into your nest.
6. With a piece of jute, create a loop and glue it down to the top of your birdie.

Aren't they just wonderful? I love this new handmade, rustic touch to our tree. These would make great Christmas gifts as well, for all of you who are scrambling with last minute gifts ;)

Christmas Baking: peppermint bark



 Yesterday we made incredibly addicting toffee pretzel bark, and today we're here with an even easier recipe for peppermint bark!  Truly, this isn't much of a recipe, but it's too good not to share.


Peppermint Bark

Ingredients:
white chocolate*
candy canes

*you can get fancy with your white chocolate and use Callebaut, or you can go the cheaper route and just use white chocolate melting wafer.

Directions:
1)  First, place your candy canes in a large plastic bag, and use a meat hammer/rolling pin/etc to smash them into small pieces.  You can use a fine strainer to sift off the very fine candy cane dust to save for later (we sprinkle it on top to decorate the bark.
2)  Melt your white chocolate in a large saucepan.
3)  Stir in the candy cane bits, and pour mixture onto a parchment lined baking sheet.  
4)  Sprinkle with the super fine dusty and/or sprinkles.  Allow to cool in the fridge, and then break into chunks and serve.

*In addition to serving this as traditional bark chunks, we also piped some of the chocolate into snowflake molds!  These worked wonderfully, and were a nice change from the norm.


Again, this bark is dangerously addicting!  So make it at your own risk!

weekly wrap up : kelso time

This past week, I had the absolute joy of having our dear ps:heart Kelso visit me in Edmonton! We had an absolute blast, eating, and eating...and eating...
@ Block 1912 on Whyte Ave. enjoying a delicious lunch of green onion cakes & house soup...

@ my absolute FAV restaurant in Edmonton, a New Orleans Diner called Da-De-O's....seriously, if you are ever in town, this place is an absolute must!! Their po-boy's, jambalaya, and sweet potato fries are to die for. Ask Kels, it's a staple whenever she visits us =]



@ Phobulous, my go-to place for Vietnamese.... did I mention that we ate... a LOT?! 

and then to top it off, Kels had to go and bake us eggnog cupcakes... seriously though, we did do other things as well! Like, make friends with cats... slash, Kelsey made friends with a cat named Solomon, while I looked on suspiciously. As cute as this guy was, cats are just sneaky, okay? They're suspicious. And they make me nervous, unless they're babies. Kittens are cool.

We also had a blast playing the latest stocking stuffer Caleb bought for me... Killer Bunnies!! LOVE this board game, unfortunately, Kels totally owned this game with her one very special Bumblebee carrot... (sorry for the game reference for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about...but you should go buy this game right no, you'll love it, I promise)

And lastly, we had an epicly awesome photoshoot which involved a lot of cold, a lot of snow, and a lot of crazy... We were glad that there was only one other person we ran into at the park, since we probably would've gotten a lot of funny looks over our little photoshoot! But here it is, the lovely, magical Kelsey as a snow princess & some fun shots with my turntable =]


I'm totally choked that my dearest Kelso is already gone, but I had an absolutely wonderful time with her while she was here and am so blessed by her friendship. Keep your eyes open for some more blog posts from both of us!
